Salmon Gamer

This is one smug salmon. And deservedly so. The game is quick (takes maybe a couple minutes to play). It's easy to learn. It gets everybody moving. Everybody involved. And, best of all, it makes people laugh.

You could think of it as a card game – that's because it's played with a special deck of cards. But it's really a people game.

It goes like this:

There are six sets of 12 cards, each a different color. Top online casinos 2020. First, give one set to each of 3-6 players who are at least six years old. There are four different cards: Happy Salmon, High 5, Switcheroo and Pound It! Each card has an associated action. Your objective is to be the first to get rid of all your cards. You can only do that if you can find someone who's playing the same kind of card. You can tell, because that person is either trying to get you to High Five or to Fist Bump (Pound) or change places (Switcheroo) or Happy Salmon (put your wrist along the other player's wrist and wiggle your hand in a salmon-fin-like manner).

You'll probably play many rounds of the game before you put it back in its neat, salmony zipper pouch. And next time you play, you might want to try the completely silent variation (though it is likely that the laughter will escape you).

Luckily, there are two great videos showing the game in action. First, here's one with kids playing:

And now, one for the growns:

O, the fun! O, the sheer Majorness of the fun!!

Designed by Ken Gruhl and Quentin Weir, from Northstar Games.

We had a little bit of down time over the Thanksgiving. My kids love to play games but we don't have a ton of free time normally. That's why I like games that are quick to learn and don't take a long time to play. Bonus points if they are portable. We recently had the opportunity to check out two games from Continuum Games. The first was a simple game called Dude designed for the teenage crowd.

Each player picks a color and takes their stack of 12 cards and shuffles them. The word 'dude' appears on each card in one of six different ways (dude, dude?, dooode, dewd, etc.) At the same time, all players turn over their stack of cards and without showing the other players their card says their card aloud. Listen carefully to how other players are exaggerating the one-word clue. If you think you have a match, make eye contact with that player and say 'dude' a few more time until you are confident it's a match. Then say 'sweet'. If both players say 'sweet' turn your cards over to see if they are a match. Keep playing until you don't have any cards left then shout 'chill' to end the game. The player with the most matches wins!

I loved how easy this game was to play and it was funny listening to my kids say 'dude' over and over in different ways. This probably isn't a game we'd play on a regular basis but it will be fun to pull out and play when they kids have friends over.

Happy Salmon has some similarities in that each player gets their own stack of cards and you are looking for a match with another player. This game is more interactive though and we really enjoyed it! Get ready for a little chaos and a lot of fun! When players make a match they have to complete the action on the card — a high five, fist bump (pound it!), Happy Salmon (a secret handshake of sorts) or a switcheroo where the players switch places with each other. The first player to discard of all their cards wins! The Happy Salmon game comes in a salmon shaped zippered pouch and includes 72 cards, and a rulebook. I love the unique storage design for this game and it's perfect for traveling! Just toss it into a backpack! It would be perfect for passing the time at an airport and getting some wiggles out.
